World Asthma Day - Tuesday 1st May

World Asthma Day is an annual event organised by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to improve asthma awareness and care around the world. Breathing in dust, gases, vapours and fumes in the workplace can cause life-changing lung diseases such as asthma and can make pre-existing conditions worse. The Health and Safety Executive HSE’S Go Home Healthy campaign calls on employers to do the right thing and protect workers from such work-related lung diseases.

Occupational Asthma is typically defined as adult asthma caused by workplace exposures and not by factors outside the workplace. Work related asthma, refers to pre-existing cases made worse by non-specific factors in the workplace.  Shortness of breath, wheezing and painful coughing are just some of the symptoms that occupational asthma sufferers may have to deal with every day.

  • 200-300 cases of occupational asthma are seen by chest physicians each year (HSE)
  • Estimated 18,000 annual new cases of self-reported “breathing or lung problems” caused or made worse by work (LFS)
  • The most common cited causes of occupational asthma by chest physicians continue to be isocyanates, flour/grain, cleaning products, wood dusts & amylase enzymes (HSE)
  • 400,000 working days lost each year due to work-related lung diseases (HSE)
  • 12,000 deaths each year due to work-related lung diseases (HSE)

Horrific injuries due to DSEAR failures

A spray foam insulation company has been fined £51,779.00 (including costs) for breaching the Regulation 6 of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) after a worker suffered severe burns while attempting to refuel petrol powered equipment. Following the event, the worker was in a coma in hospital for three months and subsequently spent over a year in hospital.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), found that the company failed to ensure that risk from dangerous substances, namely petrol, was either eliminated or reduced so far as is reasonably practicable.

Fine after teenage driver killed in crash

A farming partnership has been fined £467,274.00 (including costs) after a teenage employee died when a tractor and tandem-axle trailer he was using to transport grain collided with a bridge.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the trailer was fitted with drum type brakes that had not been correctly adjusted rendering them ineffective.

Speaking after the hearing the HSE Inspector said “many trailers are only used at harvest time and therefore this failure to maintain is likely to be widespread across the industry. Farmers are therefore reminded to ensure that they adequately maintain all work equipment including any which is not in main-stream use.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and friendly Trainee Occupational Health Advisor to join our expanding team. The successful candidate will be required to deliver occupational health screening and assessment services to our clients throughout the region and at times across the UK, therefore a full UK driving licence is required.

Applicants should be RGNs on part one of the NMC register, with a minimum of 1-year post qualification experience and have a desire to undertake additional study. Experience in an industrial setting and / or in occupational health role would be advantageous, however not necessary.
